Professor Jack C.Y. Cheng is Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Cheng obtained his MB BS degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1976. He was awarded Commonwealth Medical Fellowships to pursue specialist training in orthopaedics at the University of Oxford (1982) and the University of Edinburgh (1983). He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (with merits) by The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1999.

Professor Cheng joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1983. He had served as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Sub-Dean (Medical Education) and Associate Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Medicine, and University Dean of Students. He was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor since 2002. Professor Cheng’s portfolio encompasses student affairs and academic links. He provides leadership in strategic planning of undergraduate student recruitment, administration of scholarship and financial aid, fostering partnerships with higher education and research institutions in mainland China and abroad, development of international education programmes and research alliance, as well as expansion of student exchange and experiential learning.

Professor Cheng is a paediatric orthopaedics specialist. His research interests include etiology and etiopathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, congenital muscular torticollis, bone mineral research and biomaterial basic science and applied studies. He has published over 270 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and contributed to 15 book chapters. He serves on the editorial boards of a number of international professional journals. He is also a fellow and member of over 20 local and international professional and medical organisations.

Professor Cheng is a Fellow and Orthopaedic Specialty Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Fellow of Hong Kong College of Surgeons, Fellow of Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and Fellow of American College of Surgeons. He was elected a Fellow of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering in 2004, and an Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2007.

Professor Cheng plays an active role in community services. He was President of the Hong Kong Society for Surgery of the Hand (1990-92) and President of the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association (1995-96). He had been a member of the committees of Hong Kong Medical Council, Supplementary Medical Professions Council Committee of Department of Health, and various committees of Hong Kong Hospital Authority. He also served as medical adviser to Hong Kong Spastic Association, Hong Kong Physically Handicapped and Able-Bodied Association, and Hong Kong Childhood Injury Prevention Research Association.
